Along the route notice how the local residents live, cultivate the land, raise livestock and care for their families. Watch for giant ancient trees and exotic birds. Upon arrival, swim and explore the Grand Waterfalls. Afterward, the tour continues for some, with a hike/walk into the rainforest to find the astonishing blue river, Rio Penjamo, passing by cascading waterfalls and natural waterslides. A nature hike into a tall, dense jungle with grand “blue” waterfalls, dips into the Rio Penjamo’s magical natural “blue” pools and stops inside the jungle. For many of us, the best part will be the many stops to learn and observe the symbiosis of the flora and fauna. Our tour commences a short drive from Blue River Resort at a former palm of heart farm. From the farm we’ll enter a secondary forest and soon after, an untamed primary forest. This dense rain forest has giant trees, is home to hundreds of epiphyte plants, rich in biodiversity and lush vegetation. Enjoy peek-a-boo views of the smoking Rincon de la Vieja Volcano crater too.
Included: Guide, transportation and entrance fees
Then take walks and swims in a magical rainforest. Enter through a private farm and into a pristine private reserve through the jungle. Swim in the Mystery Pool and jump 8 feet into the amazing blue river, Rio Azul by a stunning waterfall. Nature stops include the Sangregado tree (from the word blood, in Spanish) with its red sap, the Guanacaste tree with seed pods that resemble ears and abundant life on the branches and listening and looking for birds and animals. If a fruit drops near your head, take notice as howler monkeys can be very mischievous.

One of the most exciting ways to go down a river is lying on a rubber inner tube, winding around bends and passing along calm water, white water and through adrenaline pumping chutes. Our White-Water Tubing Adventure is fun for fit adults looking for excitement as it is considered Costa Rica’s premier tubing tour. Rocks tower out of the water but are blocked by the tube like a bumper car, sending in another direction, spinning forward or backward. Being in close contact with the water means that whoever doesn’t hold on may fall out of the tube. The lush rainforest forms a picturesque periphery, through canyons and thick jungle. In fact, the sound of water rushing past is quite quiet compared to the resident howler monkeys, insects and birds. Depending upon the river water levels your tubing adventure takes place along Rio Azul, the Blue river across from the resort or the Penjamo rivers (depending on the season). All commence a 15-minute drive ride away and tubing lasts from 1 to 2 hours. The Rio Azul’s Eco-adventure completion point is a short distance from Blue River Resort & Hot Springs. The Rio Cucaracho Eco-adventure completes at a gorgeous confluence of the blue river, Rio Penjamo, Rio Negro and Rio Cucaracho. The water at our section of Rio Cucaracho is a combination of fresh and blue rivers. This tour includes a bottle of water, after the tour there will be a half hour hike, with the tube, along the river and up a small mountain, in the rainforest and farm to reach transportation back to Blue River Resort & Hot Springs.
