Hot Springs at Blue River Resort

Though Costa Rica is renowned in the world for its hot springs very few are natural and even fewer can boast about its special mineral content, like Blue River Resort & Hot Springs. The quality of the hot springs has been judged among the best and is considered one of the jewels of Costa Rica. Deep under the volcano, Rincon de la Vieja, are layers of molten rock formations infused with water, that creates the rich, health-giving minerals thatis our hot springs. The heated water can hold more dissolved solids. Our water breaks through the ground inside a small area of the Botanical, bubbling up in small volcano-like mud structures and sinkholes at 60 degrees Centigrade (140 degrees Fahrenheit).

The hot springs for the pools are then cooled, pumped through filters and into the pools, so its all natural. The waterthen flows out from the pools back toa hot springs creek whose source is found inside the botanical garden. As an aside, natural sauna is a building was built above the hot springs creek, This process minimally disturbs the natural cycle and protects the environment.

In the pictures, take notice of the green hue of the hot springs water. This is dissolved copper, a mineral property in the hot springs that acts as a natural disinfectant.

Minerals in Costa Rica Blue Rivers

Not only are hot spring infused with minerals, so are Costa Rica’s blue rivers. Thoughthe best known is the blue river, Rio Celeste, there are a several in Costa Rica. All are found by volcanos and the two by the Blue River Resort & Hot Springs are second to none. Rincon de la Vieja’s two blue rivers are Rio Azul that flows right by the resort and Rio Penjamo where we do guest tours. The blue is actually an optical illusion created by suspended particles in the river water. Ask your guide to show spots where the leaching occurs.

When coming upon a blue river for the first time, you’ll think your eyes are playing tricks. We’ve found two explanations for the cause. One source describes the process as particulate matter in the form of sulfur being emitted from underground by volcanic activity and mixing with calcium carbonate. Other sources say its aluminum silicates from the volcano activity that mixes into the river.

The mineral sediment coats the river rocks white and float in the current. The daylight entering the river reflects the blue light spectrum into our eyes, creating the spectacular blue color we see. Our Eco-adventure tour takes guests to the amazing blue river, Rio Penjamo. Also of interest on tour, are the sites where water and the minerals bubble-up from deep under the Rincon de la Vieja and overflow, as a minor tributaries, into the blue river, Penjamo. Like our hot springs, swimming in blue rivers is a special experience. Be sure to take the Grand Waterfalls and Blue River Adventure.
