Enjoy a world-class, amazing white water experience, river rafting along 72 continuous Class III-IV rapids (plus an additional 2 class V rapids that we hike around) through northern Cost Rica’s natural exotic beauty. This new river rafting expedition is rated among the top two in all of Costa Rica by our experienced guides at Flow Trips (aka Rios Tropicales). And Costa Rica is rated among the best white water river rafting locations in the world. There is non stop action with guaranteed fun for everyone whether a timid first timer or a hard core rafter. Everyone paddles as a team, creating camaraderie, friendship and maximum thrills! Safety is our number one priority and rest assured, you are in the company of the highly experienced bilingual guides. The rapids are quite technical, so be prepared to slide and paddle! This river rafting adventure will be a lasting highlight of your vacation.
Set deep in the Northern Costa Rica rain forest you’ll travel through primary forests, enclosed by canyons and venture through the untouched national park, Rincon de la Vieja. We travel 12 miles (18 km) along the gorgeous pristine river, Rio Cucaracho. About 2 km upstream from where we start, the blue volcanic river, Rio Azul empties into the Cucaracho making the color slightly blue. Along route, two more rivers flow into it; the Rio Negro and the only other blue river, Rio Penjamo (which makes the water color even bluer); at which point, we are flowing down the confluence of 4 rivers, The lush rainforest is full of amazing wildlife, like the spider, howler and white faced monkeys plus tropical birds like the bitter, white hawks, herons, egrets and much more.
Our river rafting tour begins from Blue River Resort & Hot Springs where we are driven on a10 minute drive to the Cucaracho River. Before your river rafting adventure, there is a riverside safety briefing to introduce you to your experienced guides, the raft and the river. All rafting equipment, including, life jacket, and helmet is provided. A professional safety kayak escorts each trip. The adventure lasts four hours, chock full of action with a break in the middle for a delicious “river-style” lunch to restore your energy for the second half of the of the tour. The paddle rafting journey comes to an end upon reaching the community of Birmania.
The Cucaracho river had never been run on a raft until our guiding company, Rios Tropicales and Flow Trips took their raft through the descent on February 25, 2012. This Costa Rica company was introduced to the opportunity by Blue River Resort & Hot Springs due of their reputation. Their river rafting franchise opened in 1985. We consider their guides to be river rafting junkies, many with 10 to 20 years of experience who love and enjoy nature. They hosted the World White Water Cups and some of their guides also took part in the Olympics. When it comes to experience, expertise, knowledge and standards of safety and love of nature, you are in good hands.
